Image
An Air Canada flight travelling from Toronto to Calgary had to make an emergency landing in Winnipeg Monday night after the plane's cabin air system overheated. Emergency crews were sent to the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport just after 9 p.m. Fitzpatrick said all of the customers were examined and released by paramedics. People on the plane are now stuck overnight in hotels in Winnipeg and won't depart until tomorrow. The plane had 184 passengers on board.

Canadian woman to stand trial on charge of importing cocaine to Australia

Image
A Canadian woman will stand trial for her involvement in allegedly importing cocaine into Australia on a cruise ship, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. The newspaper said Melina Roberge cried Wednesday as a magistrate ordered her tried on a charge of bringing a commercial quantity of cocaine into the country. Roberge, 23, was arrested in late August with two other Canadians -- 64-year-old Andre Tamine and 28-year-old Isabelle Lagace -- after the MS Sea Princess docked in the Australian city. The newspaper had previously reported that Lagace entered a guilty plea on the same charge last Friday and that Tamine is to appear in the New South Wales District Court next year. Australian Border Force Cmdr. Tim Fitzgerald had said detection dogs helped police allegedly find 95 kilograms of cocaine, worth an estimated $30.5 million, in suitcases. Roberge's lawyer argued the Quebec woman had no knowledge of the drugs and said there was no evidence that tied her to them, the Herald repor...

Breaking news! JUSTIN BIEBER INDICTED IN ARGENTINA FOR BEATING, STEALING

Image
Justin Bieber was just indicted for allegedly ordering a beatdown on a photog in Argentina and then stealing his money and gear. A judge in Buenos Aires just dropped the hammer against the pop star for the 2013 incident. Bieber has maintained all along this case is a bunch of nothing and the judge is a lone wolf who has been out to get him. Until the case is resolved, Bieber cannot return to Argentina, because he'll be arrested. Our sources say Bieber has a plan. His lawyers will appeal the indictment, hoping that the appeals court judges will see the indictment for what it is -- a publicity grab by the judge -- and throw the case out. The problem for Bieber ... he's about to start his South American tour and Argentina is by far the biggest market and his biggest fan base on the continent. As one Bieber source put it, "The judge is screwing his own country because Justin could infuse a huge amount of money into the economy."

'Why did Soleiman die?' Family of mentally ill inmate who died in Ontario jail says system failed them

Image
The family of an inmate who died in an Ontario jail last week is searching for answers about how a loved one they say struggled with a serious mental illness ended up lifeless in a jail cell just days after being taken into custody. CBC News has learned from his family that Soleiman Faqiri, 30, died under mysterious circumstances on Dec. 15 in segregation at Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay. His death is under investigation by both the coroner and Kawartha Lakes Police Service. "We're trying to come to terms with the fact that he's gone and he's not coming back," Faqiri's brother, Yusuf, recently told CBC Toronto at the family's Ajax, Ont., home. 'Why did Soleiman die?' "We want to know why my brother died," Yusuf said, his grief still raw. "Why did Soleiman die? How did Soleiman die? That's what we're looking for." Those questions remain unanswered since Dec. 15, when the Ministry of Community Safety and...

A man has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty manslaughter for killing his friend, 18-year-old Nicolas Quintal, near Gatineau Park in 2012. With credit for time spent in pre-sentence custody, the sentence works out to about five years. Sempels will be eligible for parole in about two-and-a-half years. During the trial, court heard that Sempels admitted to striking Quintal with a metal bar, but that he hadn't intended to kill him. Sempels had originally been charged with second-degree murder after Quintal's body was found naked near an abandoned vehicle on April 29, 2012. The body of Nicolas Quintal, 18, was found beaten in April 2012 near a vehicle along Farrell Road in the hamlet of North Onslow, Que. (Facebook) At the time, police said Quintal had been beaten with a blunt object, and that Sempels and Quintal were ...

Canada, U.S. to ban offshore oil and gas licences in Arctic waters

Image
CALGARY -- The federal government announced Tuesday plans to ban offshore oil and gas licensing in the Arctic, citing the need to protect the environment from future energy development, but the move was largely dismissed by industry observers as a weak gesture that won't harm their interests. The measure was part of a joint announcement with the U.S., which designated the bulk of its federally controlled waters in the Arctic Ocean and certain areas in the Atlantic Ocean as indefinitely off-limits to future oil and gas leasing. Advertisement Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada's ban is intended to ensure a sustainable Arctic economy, preserve the region's ecosystem and prevent future risks associated with offshore oil and gas activity -- goals that earned applause from environmental groups such as Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund. But experts pointed out that there are no drilling plans in the region now, suggesting that the ban is of little consequence. Michael ...
